Panel a multi-style superfamily consisting of 4 sets: Serif + Sans + Mono for each.
This typographic ensemble has a reliable weight spectrum ranging from Light to Black. Each weight includes a lively, matching italic design.

Bringing You Home to Meet the Family

1. Panel Mono

"Ball"ternates: a stylistic set in the mono italic that utilizes open loop ball terminals in the 2 lightest weights. When the counter space becomes too small, they enclose like a traditional ball terminal.

2. Panel Sans Mono

The next style tackled was the 'Sans' Mono. In the design of the lowercase letters for Panel Mono, I implemented several letterforms that were slightly ambiguous. I used this opportunity to look for ways to create 'shared' forms between all the styles.

3. Panel

It made sense to look at how these two monospaced designs would translate into proportional companions. The goal for these more traditional designs was not only to even out the texture and spacing but to retain as much of the 'mono' qualities as possible. 

4. Panel Sans
The final style to wrap up the superfamily is Panel Sans. This section of the design space feels like the most paired down but retains a high level of instantly notable details. Letterforms like the 'r' + 'k' carry over beautifully and I have a feeling this version will be the most used in the entire family.

Correction (Optical that is)

The Sans Italic design was seen as a way to layer an additional voice to the family. This design took a more toned down approach and became an optically corrected oblique. While it still has a lot of flavor that carries over from the upright, it definitely takes on a supporting roll and doesn't try to steal the show.
